The escort figters on the way back from bombing missions over Germany often chose to expend their remaining ammo in low-level strafing.


Here Mustangs of the famed 332nd FG "Redtails" do damage to Luftwaffe planes they catch on the ground.


The strafing missions were often the more dangerous part of the job, with high fatalities from ground fire.
