"Whaam!"

Spitfire BS 451 of 303 squadron. This aircraft was being flown by Flt Sgt Chudek on 17 August 1943 and was used to startling effect when he downed TWO Fw 190s. The Fw 190 in the image is attempting the classic roll and dive that was its trade mark manoeuvre but on this occasion it was too late.



In this drawing James Baldwin captures the sense of the claustrophobia that was often talked about by combat pilots who spoke of large empty skies suddenly becoming filled for a couple of intense and hectic minutes.
