BAE Harrier GR9 ZD461 ‘51A’



The Harrier GR9 is a heavily updated development of the existing GR7, incorporating the ability to use a wide range of advanced precission weaponry, new communications and systems and airframe upgrades. The improved aircraft equip the Joint Force Harrier which was established on 1st April 2000 in response to the proposal brought by the British Government as part of the Strategic Defence Review.



Today, following the withdrawal from service of the Royal Navy Sea Harrier aircraft, JFH consists of No1(F) Sqn and No IV(AC) Sqn of the Royal Air Force and elements of No 800 & 801 Naval Air squadrons (Naval Strike Wing) from RAF Cottesmore forming the operation front line squadrons and No 20(R) Squadron from RAF Wittering as the Operational Conversion Unit.
