Breckon, Don

Ref: BRECK
Don Breckon was born in 1935 in Corby, Northamptonshire and is married with three children. He trained at the Bath Academy of Art and went to teach art at schools in Bedford and Reading. His painting during this period ranged from city scapes to abstracts and other experimental work. His work was then becoming related to railway themes and was included in two travelling exhibitions at the Industrial Artists Group. Today his work is entirely involved with the railway scene and he has appeared on television and had two books published on his work.

Brown, Stephen

Brown, Stephen

Ref: BROWN
Stephen Brown is a self-taught artist who has specialised almost exclusively in aviation subjects for the last 15 years. Building on a background as a landscape and aviation photographer, his style carefully combines both these areas of interest. Stephen’s originals in oil are in much demand and have been regularly exhibited with the prestigious Guild of Aviation Artists.

Demand for his originals is high with regular commissions being undertaken for commercial and private clients as well as the RAF. For many years Stephen successfully combined a career as a professional in the IT industry with his passion for art. Recently though he has chosen to go full time as an aviation artist

Stephen says, "My interest in aviation comes both from my father, who was a designer at Westland, and from growing up in post war Britain on a diet of films like 633 Squadron and The Dambusters. I used to combine aircraft and landscape photos in the darkroom with quite convincing results - when I reached the limit of what I could do with this I turned to painting to get greater flexibility. Photography taught me much about composition, colour and contrast - drawing and brushwork skills, though, have taken a long time to develop.

My favourite paintings are those like In Safe Hands where I can combine the aircraft with a dramatic sky and plenty of period landscape detail."

Buffery, Martin

Buffery, Martin

Ref: BUFF
Martin has spent most of his life in the world of art and design. An early interest in science fiction led to an appreciation of the imaginative paintings of illustrators like Jim Burns or Alan Lee and this combined with the influence of Ridley Scott's film "Bladerunner", pointed the way towards a career in art.

However an interview with one of the chief designers at the Rover car company when he was sixteen altered Martin's trajectory away from pure art and illustration and into the world of automotive design. He has spent nearly twenty years in this demanding world initially gaining an MA at Coventry University before becoming a principal designer for Rover group and then Land Rover. His work has included the Land Rover Defender SVX show car and more recently he was responsible for the interior design of the Land Rover Freelander2. However in the increasingly complex world of automotive design Martin has found himself spending more time in meetings than at the drawing board, and to compensate for this started drawing for his own pleasure in his spare time. Gradually this hobby became more serious and exhibitions with the Guild of Aviation Artists and the Guild of Motoring Artists followed.

His work is mostly in either pencil or watercolour, and although Martin enjoys commissions on any subject concentrates mostly on automotive, aviation and animal subjects.

When not drawing and painting Martin enjoys travelling, which he finds a great inspiration for his work, and after gaining his private pilots license in 2001 flies a Cessna C152 around the Warwickshire countryside.

Chambers, Graham

Chambers, Graham

Ref: CHAM
Graham Chambers is a self-taught artist and only started painting as a hobby in 1993 when his daughters bought him his first watercolour set and sable brush. In 1996 after redundancy from the print industry he developed his talent around his wife’s hobby of breeding and showing border Collies, learning to work these dogs with sheep. He was further inspired by his interest in old tractors and Landrovers, and the combination of these related subject matters is portrayed

Coulson, Gerald

Coulson, Gerald

Ref: COUL
Gerald Coulson has been painting professionally for over 30 years and has a reputation that is second to none. Entirely self taught, he developed his technique to such a high standard that his work was published as fine art prints, enabling him to begin a full time painting career in 1969. Since that time his work, covering many different subjects, has been published and marketed worldwide as both open and limited edition prints. Gerald has had many one-man shows both in the UK and the USA and his work has been extensively exhibited throughout the world. A recent one man show of his in the UK attracted more than 3000 people in two days. The Fine Art Trade Guild have placed him in the top ten best selling artists no less than fifteen times - three times at number one. Coulson's passion for aircraft stems from childhood. This passion led to an apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer after which he served in the RAF as a technician and with British Airways as an engineer at Heathrow. His knowledge of aircraft engineering, combined with his drawing ability, led to him becoming a Technical Illustrator of service manuals for Civil and Military aircraft. These experiences and technical background have allowed him an insight and intimate knowledge of the aircraft he paints. Along with a unique ability to capture these aircraft on canvas this naturally led to a painting career which he has developed to successfully cover a wide variety of subjects. Following a trip to the 1991 British Grand Prix his interest in Motor racing was fuelled. His ability to capture the technical detail and a talent for painting subjects at speed meant that this was a perfect natural progression alongside his aviation work and he is now also firmly established as one of the worlds leading motor racing artists. A Vice President and founder member of the Guild of Aviation Artists he is a four times winner of the Flight International Trophy for outstanding aviation painting. He qualified for his pilots licence in 1960 and is still actively flying today - mostly vintage aircraft, and can often be seen buzzing over the Fens of Cambridgeshire in a Tiger Moth. Whatever the subject he paints, whether aviation, landscape or portrait, his unique ability to capture the realism and 'mood'of the scene is unsurpassed, making him one of the most widely collected and highly regarded artists in the world today.

Cuneo, Terence

Cuneo, Terence

Ref: CUNE
Terence Cuneo CVO,OBE Born 1st November 1907 , Died 3rd January 1996. Terence Cuneo was not only one of the worlds greatest military painters, he also one of the top railway artists as well. Terence Cuneo was also the official artist for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Terence Cuneo was born in London on November 1st 1907. His parents Cyrus and Nell were both artists who met while studying with Whistler in Paris. Terence Cuneo studied at the Chelsea Polytechnic and Slade School of Art. He became an illustrator for a number of magazines and book publishers. During World War Two Terence Cuneo joined the army and became a sapper but also worked with the War Artists Advisory Committee, and in this role he produced illustrations of various factories during wartime and other wartime events. Soon after the end of the war Terence Cuneo was commissioned to produce a series of paintings of railways and their locomotives. And this was followed by being appointed the official artist for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which helped promote Terence Cuneo to a worldwide audience and a number of major commissions followed. (An interesting trademark Cuneo painted in his paintings is a little mouse.) A major part of his paintings were commissioned by various British regiments and many of these terrific paintings are shown here In 1994 Cranston Fine Arts approached Terrence Cuneo to reproduce a number of these historical art paintings and with his consent and the consent of the regiments involved a total of 800 of each print was re produced. Sadly in 1996 Terence Cuneo passed away, but he has left us with a fantastic collection of fine paintings of military history and steam locomotive paintings, which are collected around the world and are very sought after. Terence Cuneo was admired and respected by his peers and public and a large bronze memorial statue of Terence Cuneo by Philip Jackson stands in the concourse of Waterloo Station in London.

Fare, Brian

Fare, Brian

Ref: FARE
Brian Fare has received no ‘formal’ training in art and is entirely self-taught with his preferred medium being the graphite pencil. All of the aviation illustrations are drawn using graphite pencils ranging from 6H to 9B producing images that vary in tone from the richest of blacks to the purest of whites including all shades of grey in between. Being born and raised in Freckleton Lancashire, and living a few hundred yards from the main runway of BAE Systems Warton aerodrome where his father worked on aircraft such as the Lightning, TSR2, Jaguar and the MRCA/Tornado has stemmed the keen interest in aviation since being a young lad. After leaving school, a career as an aircraft technician serving with the Royal Air Force with over 25 years service provided the underpinning technical background ,which coupled along with an interest in aviation , has provided the insight and technical knowledge of the aircraft being drawn in fine detail. It is only recently that his pencil drawings depicting aircraft of the Royal Air Force have ‘taken-off’ and the popularity of his work has increased, with many of his original works being commissioned as leaving gifts for colleagues within the Royal Air Force and BAE Systems.

All of Brian's aviation illustrations are produced from original pencil drawings, scanned using the latest technology and reproduced using the litho process on 300gsm archival quality white board using lightfast inks. Each print is completed with the aim of depicting an accurate representation of the subject as possible making them ideal gifts at an affordable price.

Shepherd, David

Shepherd, David

Ref: SHEP
David was born in Hendon, North London and now lives in Sussex. Perhaps more famous for his wildlife paitings he began by painting aviation subjects and steam trains some of which may be seen in our galleries.

David Shepherd - "to start with, my life was a series of disasters". Growing up in the 1930’s, his one ambition was to be a game warden in Kenya and so, on leaving school, he went to Kenya and was promptly told by the National Parks people that he was not wanted. On returning to England, David was faced with two choices. One was ‘to drive a bus for a living’ and the other was to pursue the only other possibility: painting. However, he admits that he had very little interest in art and certainly no talent; for he was promptly rejected by the Slade School of Fine Art as ‘untrainable’.
By chance, he met Robin Goodwin, a professional artist, who took him under his wing, David believes ‘as a challenge’! After three years with Robin Goodwin, he started his artistic career pursuing his first two loves, steam engines and aviation. It was the latter that led him to the Royal Air Force who began to fly him around the world as their guest and it was a trip to Aden in 1960 which changed his life. It seemed that almost everyone wanted a painting, but, more important still, the Royal Air Force flew him down to Kenya where he was commissioned by them to paint his very first wildlife painting and his career never looked back from that moment. It was on that same visit that he became a conservationist after finding 255 dead zebra around a poisoned water hole.
On returning to London, he had his first one-man show of wildlife paintings. The exhibition sold out in the first twenty minutes and he has not looked back since! Apart from the tremendous demand for his originals, a number of which he donates to wildlife through The David Shepherd Conservation Foundation, to pay back what, in his own words, is my enormous debt to the animals I paint, his published work is avidly sought after.
Davids passion for steam locomotives is well known, and in 1967 he purchased two 120 ton main line steam locomotives, ‘Black Prince’ and ‘The Green Knight’ and founded The East Somerset Railway, at Cranmore, Somerset, a registered charity and fully operational steam railway. His latest venture is the presentation to him of a 15F Class locomotive, even larger than ‘Black Prince’, by South African Railways as a free gift.

Wong, Ronald

Wong, Ronald

Ref: WONG
Ronald's name needs little introduction to the aircrew of military bases in Western Europe and the United States, for whom his precise and dramatic work has been a familiar presence and inspiration for many years. His original training in Britain was an Honours Degree in Biochemistry, and it was only after years of service in the British Health Service that he decided to embark on a career in painting, in particular his childhood love aircraft. He developed his own unique style as a self-taught artist, combining expert technical accuracy with dynamic composition, colour and atmosphere to produce the kind of work so widely admired in the aviation art world.

He is a long-standing Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists in the UK, where he has won numerous prizes, as well as a Member of the American Society of Aviation Artists. He continues to be one of the few successful independent artists, unattached to any promotional galleries or commercial publishers, preferring instead to preserve his freedom to work from source i.e. directly with the aircrew who are the inspiration behind so many of his works. Aside from the innumerable paintings he has achieved over the years which hang all over the world, he has to date published some 170 runs of prints, which must be something of a record for an individual artist. Apart from aviation, his artistic interests range widely from motoring and marine art to portraiture to wildlife and animals to landscapes. He lives in the ancient city of St Albans in Hertfordshire with his family.
